5 Essential High Heels for Every Woman's Closet

Let’s talk about shoes, ba-by!

Ahh, the infamous high heel.

You either love them or you hate them, and if you can’t appreciate them at least a little bit, then I’m sorry, but we just can’t be friends.

Although the heel had actually been invented for men much earlier (for practical means), the iconic shoe is said to have been brought into popularity by Catherine de Medici, who was engaged to the Duke of Orleans. A petite woman, she reportedly wore heels as a means to appear taller and more intimidating around the Duke’s favorite mistress, and because of her captivating appeal while wearing them, women became obsessed.

Since then, heels have come a long (and very high) way, and nearly every woman owns at least one pair. However, if you’re a shoe-lover or fashion-lover of any sort, you most likely own quite a few. Here are the staples that I feel every woman should own...

The Classic Black Stilletto

If there is anything you get out of this post, let it be the black stiletto. This is an absolute must-have for any woman, anywhere.

Suede is my usual M.O. when it comes to the classic black pump. However, patent leather is lovely, or if you’re feeling really fancy, velvet is absolutely stunning. I also really appreciate d’Orsay styles for their understated sexiness.

Two things are a must for the classic stiletto: A pointed toe (or at the very least an almond toe), and no shorter than a 3-inch heel (unless you’re at work).

The Christian Louboutin “So Kate” and Manolo Blahnik “BB” pumps are the epitome of a classic black stiletto. But if your budget isn’t in the $700-range (I know mine isn’t!) then Steve Madden and Nine west make really great versions. P.S.: The Nine West "Tatiana" pump listed below is actually my favorite pump ever. The toe has the perfect point and the heel feels very sturdy (which is a major plus for my tall, clumsy ass). They're always updating the finishes/prints on it too, so it's a great go-to.

The Perfect Nude Pump

This shoe literally goes with a-ny-thing. Dress it down with some dark denim and a slouchy tee; rock it at the office with a bold-colored power suit; or pair it with an LBD for a bombshell date night look.

Let’s be clear, though, by “perfect,” I mean perfect for you. Finding a color that complements your skin tone is essential to utilizing the nude pump’s ability to lengthen and sex-ify those gams. Also, I really think that traditional matte leather or vegan leather is the way to go here, but patent or suede are also gorgeous.

Side Note: The velvet Pradas below are bordering on burnt orange, but I know there's a woman who would just kill in them as nude. Seriously guys, it's giving me chills just thinking about it.

The Embellished Heel

Embellished heels are really great when you want to make an otherwise neutral ensemble pop. They're especially sweet during the Holiday season. Embellishment means something different to each woman, though. It could be as simple as a sweet bow, or as complex as crystals and feathers and neon yellow. You do you, girrrrl! But whatever you do, wear it with confidence!

The Badass Bootie

Because, duh. Who doesn’t like to feel like a badass? When you want to amp up a look for a concert, or just turn heads in general, the badass bootie is the way to go. A pointed toe is mandatory, and patent leather or studs are a plus.

P.S.: I threw in a pair of thigh-highs also because they are beyond badass.

The Strappy Sandal

This shoe is essential for dressy summer outings. I prefer mine with a block heel, one toe strap, and one ankle strap.

You can have as many or as few straps as you like, but one thing is for certain: an ankle strap is flattering on literally everyone.
